Urgent care

Urgent care is a term that describes the range of services provided for people who require same day health or social care advice, care or treatment. This is different from emergency care provided in accident and emergency (A&E), other hospital departments, 999 and ambulances, which are set up to respond to serious or life-threatening emergencies.

Across the NHS, urgent care services are changing to ensure that patients get the right care, in the right place, whenever they need it. With increasing pressure on services, and as technology and the needs of the population change, enhancements to urgent care services will ensure that we provide a modern, responsive service fit for the future.

We know that local people find the options available to them confusing and are not always sure which service is most appropriate for which illness or injury. We are working to simplify this. See ‘get the right care’ for more information on the services available to you.

What’s improving?

The NHS Long Term Plan was published in January 2019 and sets out an ambitious vision for the future of the NHS, including commitments to improving urgent care services. Over the next 10 years, NHS organisations will work together to ensure a service in which patients get more options, better support, and more joined up care.

In West Sussex;

  • 100% of the population of England are now able to access urgent care advice through the NHS 111 telephone or online service 111.nhs.uk.
  • Evening and weekend GP appointments are now available across England. You can book these in the normal way through your GP Practice, during normal opening hours.
  • Urgent Treatment Centres are open or being developed, which will be open 12 hours a day, every day of the week. Find out more about Urgent Treatment Centres.
  • Patients registered at practices in Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex can speak to a GP or nurse through a pre-booked appointment via video connection using an app called LIVI.
